John R. Ranson, 19, student, saved George R. Holder, 16, farmhand, from suffocation, Keene, Texas, November 26, 1908. After one man had refused to descend and another had called to be hoisted when lowered part way, Ranson was lowered by means of a rope to the bottom of a 43-foot well, where George had been overcome by gas. Ranson fastened a rope to George and became dazed but was drawn up, and he recovered. George was drawn up and revived. 4459-394
