John R. Saddler saved Timothy Cundiff from suffocation, Solway, Kentucky, July 31, 1911. Cundiff, 43, laborer, was overcome by damp in a well 35 feet deep, and men who gathered at the well refused to descend for him. A young man arrived and agreed to descend, and he was lowered with a rope tied to him. When he was 25 feet from the top, he signaled to be drawn up, as he was getting dizzy. Saddler, 39, farmer, arrived as the other man was being hoisted and learned what had caused the accident. He had the men lower him into the well with the rope tied around him. When he reached the bottom, he found that the rope was too short to permit of his stooping. A delay of one or two minutes resulted while the rope was being spliced. A chain was lowered, and he tied it around Cundiff, and both were hoisted. Cundiff was revived. 7178-1080
