John R. Tarrant rescued Mary K. Jacob and Vaughn C. Dean from burning, Gardena, California, March 30, 1972. When fire broke out in a house trailer, Miss Jacob, 19, and Dean, 21, motorcycle mechanic, were overcome by smoke. Tarrant, 30, cable splicer, entered the burning trailer via the living-room door. In dense smoke and intense heat he located Miss Jacob and dragged her toward the door of the living room, where the spreading flames were the most extensive. Persons outside then managed to open the bedroom door. Tarrant dragged Miss Jacob to that door and gave her to persons outside. Although he was coughing from the smoke, Tarrant then located Dean and carried him through the door of the bedroom, which very soon afterward was filled with flames. Miss Jacob and Dean recovered from burns they had sustained. 53258-6032
