John Rawson Smith, 22, clerk, saved Helen M. Noble, 85, from burning, Glenora, New York, July 25, 1922. Mrs. Noble was asleep on the second floor of a frame cottage when it took fire, and she was aroused and made her way downstairs to a porch, which was 12 feet above the ground. The fire spread rapidly, and Mrs. Noble, who was bewildered and somewhat feeble, did not heed calls to her to jump from the porch. Smith, who was only partly dressed, was then hoisted by another man up to the porch. Mrs. Noble meanwhile retreated four or five feet into the living room; and Smith entered the room, which was burning at two sides and was filled with smoke, picked up Mrs. Noble, carried her to the porch, and lowered her to the other man. A burst of flame swept past him as he lowered her. Smith, thinking there might be other persons in the cottage, ran along the porch 20 feet to a door, but he saw no one as he looked through it, and he then jumped to the ground. He suffered from extensive burns and was disabled five weeks. Mrs. Noble was seriously burned and otherwise injured, but she recovered. 22651-1874
