John Robert Covington rescued William W. Song from assault, Mount Vernon, New York, August 5, 1985. When Song, 45, was attacked by a man wielding a hatchet, he fled into a nearby bank. The assailant pursued him and resumed the attack Inside the bank. A bank customer, Covington, 52, real estate salesman, threw a chair toward the assailant to distract him and ordered the assailant to leave Song alone. The assailant then turned on Covington, allowing Song to flee. Covington was struck by the hatchet as he and the assailant fought for control of the weapon, and the assailant bit Covington on an eyelid severely. Police arrived shortly and arrested the assailant. Covington’s eyelid required sutures; he recovered. Song was hospitalized for treatment of his extensive wounds.
