John Samuel Nevins, Jr., assisted in an attempt to save Thomas R. English and Wayne A. Nagle from suffocation, Allentown, Pennsylvania, July 14, 1973. A college student, reporting for temporary work at a sewer interceptor station, saw English, 20, lying unconscious at the foot of a ladder that descended to the building’s lower level, through which flowed open sewage. When informed of the situation by the student, Nevins, 35, park maintenance hand, accompanied him back to the station after calling police. Both descended to the lower level, where they found Nagle, 17, also unconscious. By the time they had determined that both English and Nagle were dead, Nevins and the student were feeling dizzy; and they began ascending the ladder. The student reached the upper level and left the building, badly nauseated; but Nevins lost consciousness and fell from the ladder to the lower level. Firemen arrived and removed Nevins, who was revived but was found to be permanently disabled.
