John Stratton rescued Paul E. McKenna from burning, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, December 29, 1985. McKenna, 23, was asleep in his second-floor apartment when fire broke out in his bedroom. He awoke and began to scream. Asleep in another bedroom, Stratton, 25, piano mover, awoke to McKenna’s cries. Stratton fled the building but then returned to the apartment when he discovered McKenna was still inside. Despite flames and dense smoke in McKenna’s bedroom, Stratton entered it, located McKenna, and started to carry him out, but their course was blocked by a closed door that had no knob. After kicking the door open, Stratton carried McKenna down the stairs and outside the building. McKenna was hospitalized for first- and second-degree burns to more than 20 percent of his body. Stratton suffered first-degree burns to his hands and feet; he recovered. 60888-7049
