John Szabrinski, 29, cage operator, died helping to rescue men from a burning mine, Cherry, Illinois, November 13, 1909. In the heat and dense smoke, Szabrinski assisted dazed miners to the hoisting cages on the second vein of coal. After going to the surface on account of the dense smoke, he returned to his post on the second vein and signaled for the operation of the cages. When a blast of heat and flames struck the main shaft, Szabrinski and others burned to death on the cage. 5543-422
