John T. Brooke, 22, teacher, saved Earl L. R. Askam, 17, student, and died attempting to save Clarence M. Dell, 19, student, and George W. Smith, 26, teacher, from drowning, San Mateo, California, August 15, 1907. Earl and Dell became distressed and exhausted in the waters of San Francisco Bay 30 feet from a bathing pier and could not swim farther against the waves, which were five feet high. Brooke, who had heart trouble, and Smith took off their outer clothes and jumped from the pier. Smith became distressed before reaching the boys, but Brooke reached Earl and took hold of him. Dell bad grabbed Earl, and Brooke released Earl and swam beside him, encouraging him to swim to the pier. He pushed Earl up the steps of the pier and then swam toward the others, but before reaching them, he became distressed, and all were drowned. The bodies were recovered later. 5210-756
