John Tirone died attempting to save Angelo D. Stocco from drowning, Port Colborne, Ontario, August 9, 1972. Angelo, 9, fell from a railroad bridge into deep water in the Welland Canal, where he floundered and screamed for help. Tirone, 52, railway bridge operator, ran to the bank of the canal and dived into the water without removing any of his attire. He swam to Angelo, who was 100 feet from the bank. During the struggles that followed, Tirone was forced under a number of times. He then went under again and did not return to the surface. Other men entered the water; but before they could reach Angelo, he sank and drowned. The bodies of Tirone and Angelo later were recovered by divers.
