John Trifu died helping to save Joseph Kovaci from drowning, Somohauk, Illinois, July 21, 1973. Joseph, 16 got into trouble in deep water about 100 feet from the bank of Holiday Lake and called for help. Removing part of his attire, Trifu, 20, college student, entered the water and swam to where Joseph was floundering. Trifu submerged briefly twice and each time lifted Joseph so the latter’s head was well above the surface. Trifu then suddenly released his hold on Joseph, went under, and drowned. Another college student arrived and took Joseph safely to the bank.
