John W. Basey rescued Russell E. Dean from assault, Phoenix, Arizona, July 19, 1989. Attempting to make an arrest, Dean, 40, police officer, struggled on the ground with a 16-year-old male who had gained control of Dean’s loaded revolver and was threatening him with it. Driving by, Basey, 40, window washer, saw the assault. He stopped and immediately ran to the scene, despite a warning by Dean that the assailant was armed. Basey grasped the assailant’s wrists and forced him off Dean, then convinced him to let go of the revolver. The assailant released the revolver and was then handcuffed. Dean sustained a sprained left knee and scrapes to his arms and legs; he recovered.
