John W. Day, 43, farmer and dairyman, died attempting to save Robert H. Clark, 34, from burning, Oak Hill, Louisiana, April 12, 1913. Day’s home caught fire at night, and, dressed only in nightclothes, he rushed into a smoke-filled room adjacent to Clark’s to save Clark, who was partly paralyzed. Although his wife called to him to come out, he made no response. Clark’s cries could be heard for some little time, but nothing was heard from Day. The framework of the house fell, and the building was consumed. It was found that, through Day’s efforts, Clark had been able to leave his room and enter the one Day had entered, where both had been burned to death. 10414-863
