John W. Lawrence saved Samuel S. Voshell from drowning, Seabreeze, Florida, March 22, 1925. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Voshell, 70, insurance office manager, was carried by a strong undertow into deep water 225 feet from shore. There were waves three feet high. Lawrence, 34, insurance broker, waded from shore and swam to Voshell, who put his hand on Lawrence’s shoulder. Lawrence swam 50 feet toward shore with him and became weak. A life preserver was then brought to them by a swimmer from shore, and Voshell and another man who was in need of help rested on it.. Lawrence and the swimmer tried to tow the two men to shore, but became winded, and they left the men resting on the life preserver, believing them comparatively safe, and swam toward shore. Lawrence became so exhausted that he had to be assisted by his companion, who near wadable water was compelled to abandon Lawrence. Another good swimmer then helped Lawrence to shore. The men on the life preserver were taken to shore by others. 25165-2102
