John W. Smith, 14, student, saved Paula B. Prabst, 18, and Sophia T. Bock, 24, from drowning, Schofield, Wisconsin, July 28, 1916. Miss Prabst, while swimming in Lake Wausae, became distressed in water over her depth. Miss Bock, who waded to chest-deep water and extended a hand to Miss Prabst, was pulled into deep water by her and also became distressed. They struggled briefly, and when they separated, Miss Prabst came to the surface 16 feet from shore, where the water was more than six feet deep, and Miss Bock arose 10 feet farther from shore. Smith, who was much smaller than the young women, swam from the shore to Miss Prabst and was about to take hold of her when she grasped his hand. He jerked his hand from her, turned her on her back, grasped her hair, and swam six feet with her to wadable water. He then swam to Miss Back, turned her on her back, grasped her hair, and swam to wadable water with her. She was unconscious but was revived. 16838-1440
