John Waters Evans, 32, glass blower, died attempting to save Doris E. Smalley, 15, from drowning, Coshocton, Ohio, July 4, 1921. Doris got into water over her depth in the Walhonding River 75 feet from the bank. Evans, who was in a boat 20 feet from her, jumped from the boat toward her. He sank almost at once 10 feet from Doris and did not rise. Doris sank just after Evans, and she and Evans were drowned. 21558-1678
