John William Zaelit died attempting to save Curtis H. Miya from drowning, Salt Lake City, Utah, August 15, 1986. Curtis, 2, was spilled into the water of the Jordan River at the base of a dam after the canoe in which he, his father, and two others had been riding overturned. Zaelit, 31, mechanic, had been watching from a point nearby. He immediately jumped into the river and swam toward Curtis. Curtis’s father grasped Curtis and swam with him to the bank. Zaelit submerged. He was recovered later from the river near the dam but could not be revived.
