John Winstead rescued Sheri H. Prow from assault, Madison, Tennessee, January 14, 1991. As she entered her automobile, which was parked in the lot of a supermarket, Ms. Prow, 24, was approached by a man who was armed with a knife. He threatened her and, in an ensuing struggle, inflicted numerous stab wounds. Winstead, 35, engineering technician, was nearby in the parking lot when he witnessed the assault. He ran to Ms. Prow’s car and, approaching the assailant from behind, grabbed him to pull him away from Ms. Prow. The assailant then struggled with and stabbed Winstead in the chest and side. Ms. Prow fled back to the supermarket. Winstead and another man who then arrived wrestled the assailant to the ground and held him until police arrived and arrested him. Ms. Prow and Winstead were both hospitalized for treatment, including surgery, of their wounds, and they recovered, Winstead spending more than two weeks in the hospital.
