John Woodhouse rescued Chad R. Doherty from burning, Edmonton, Alberta, February 3, 1985. Doherty, 18, was a passenger in the front seat of a car that collided with another vehicle at night and burst into flames. From nearby, Woodhouse, 22, security guard, drove to the scene and attempted to open the passenger door of the burning car, but it was jammed, as was the driver’s door. Using a fire extinguisher, Woodhouse broke the window of the driver’s door and, despite flames in the back-seat area and issuing 10 feet off the rear portion of the car, reached inside and pulled a semi-conscious Doherty through the window. Doherty was hospitalized for extensive burns. 60214-6984
