Johnathan R. Desir helped attempt to save Joseph Rose from burning, Queens, New York, May 15, 1994. Rose, 46, was inside the cab of the gasoline tanker truck that he had been driving after the truck overturned on a highway interchange ramp. Gasoline from the truck’s 7,000-gallon load poured out of the tanker and onto the surrounding ground. Desir, 24, truck driver, drove upon the scene, observed the wreckage, and stopped. He approached the overturned truck and found Rose alive but trapped by wreckage. Joined by other men, Desir was working to free Rose by manipulating the wreckage when a massive explosion occurred at the truck, engulfing it in flames. Rose died. Desir and others attempting Rose’s rescue were burned, Desir requiring extensive hospitalization for deep burns to his face and arms.
