Jonah M. Rosenfield rescued John H. Reid from burning, Deer Isle, Maine, August 25, 1989. Reid, 64, was dazed in the cockpit of his single-engine amphibian airplane after it crashed on the bank of Lily Pond and broke into flame. Rosenfield, 18, one of a group of college students on an outing at the pond, witnessed the crash and immediately ran to the scene. Despite flames on the plane’s engine and in its cockpit and the intense heat, Rosenfield opened the passenger door of the plane, extended his upper body into the cockpit, and released Reid’s seat belt. He then grasped Reid and pulled him to the door, then helped him to the ground and away from the plane, which shortly was engulfed in flame. Reid was hospitalized almost a month for treatment of second- and third-degree burns.
