Jonathan D. Nitkin helped to save Craig Wrolsen from drowning, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida, March 24, 1988. Wrolsen, 33, entered the Atlantic Ocean to go to the aid of a man who was carried seaward by a very strong undertow. As Wrolsen waded and swam toward the man, a surfer reached the victim and took him to safety. Attempting then to return to shore, Wrolsen too was caught in the undertow and carried seaward. Nitkin, 27, ship’s navigator, who was on the beach, observed Wrolsen, ran into the water, and swam to him. Nitkin held Wrolsen and swam against the current toward shore. When they were near the beach, the surfer aided them the remaining distance. Wrolsen and Nitkin were exhausted, but they recovered, Wrolsen requiring hospital treatment.
