Josef Gluck rescued Josef Neumann and saved an indeterminate number of individuals from assault, Monsey, New York, December 28, 2019. A man armed with a machete with an 18-inch blade, entered a home following a religious ceremony and, swinging the machete, wounded Neumann, 71, and others in the home. Gluck, 32, synagogue manager, and others fled the home. Gluck reentered the house, saw Neumann in the dining room, and, unable to move him, shouted at Neumann to flee or hide. Neumann, badly injured, was unable to do so. As the assailant reentered the dining room Gluck tried to verbally draw the assailant out the front door. Gluck left the home and waited several seconds, but the assailant didn’t follow him. Gluck reentered the home and found the assailant facing Neumann. Gluck again shouted at the assailant, who turned around, and Gluck threw a small table at him, striking the assailant, and ran outside. The assailant chased Gluck and threatened him. Gluck then ran to a nearby synagogue and warned those inside to lock the door, but the assailant did not attempt entry and shortly returned to his car, while Gluck followed him in the darkness. Gluck recorded the assailant’s license plate number and gave it to police who arrested the assailant two hours later. Neumann died of his injuries three months later. Four other injured victims recovered. Gluck was not injured.
