Joseph A. Czajkowski, Jr., saved Raymond M. Martinez from drowning, Lowell, Michigan, June 6, 1976. Raymond, 10, who could not swim., fell into turbulent water below a dam in the Flat River and was carried away from the bank by the current. Czajkowski, 30, dived into the river and swam to Raymond, who then was in deep water about 35 feet from the bank. Raymond struggled with Czajkowski, causing both to be submerged briefly a number of times. Czajkowski succeeded in pushing Raymond to within the reach of some men who had waded into the water. While the men were taking Raymond to the bank, Czajkowski was carried back out by the current but was able to work his way back to safety.
