Joseph A. Scavnicky, 55, steelworker, rescued Charlotte B. Nachim, 40, from assault, Girard, Ohio, July 13, 1968. A six-foot youth who had broken into other homes for the purpose of robbery cut the screen from a window of the dwelling in which Mrs. Nachim was alone. He climbed into the house and, encountering Mrs. Nachim in the kitchen, thrust at her with a knife, striking her in the chest. Unaware that she had been wounded, Mrs. Nachim ran outside and shouted to Scavnicky, a neighbor, that someone was in her house. She then reentered the dwelling and came upon the youth in the dining room. He knocked her to the floor and began to pummel her with his fists, one holding the knife. Scavnicky arrived and, grasping the assailant from behind, pulled him backward. As the youth turned toward Scavnicky, Mrs. Nachim got to her feet and ran outside. The assailant grappled with Scavnicky, striking at his chest and shoulders. The two scuffled for several minutes, each punching the other. The assailant broke away and ran from the dwelling. He later was apprehended. Mrs. Nachim, who had been stabbed twice, and Scavnicky, who had sustained four stab wounds, were hospitalized. They recovered.
