Joseph Artner, 22, printer, died attempting to save Anna Heist, 40, from drowning, Glencoe, Illinois, August 4, 1929. While floating on an inflated rubber tube in Lake Michigan, Mrs. Heist drifted into deep water and was unable to swim to shore. Artner waded from shore and then swam with much difficulty through rough water 115 feet to her. They were seen together on the crest of a wave for a moment. Mrs. Heist alone appeared on a wave again and 10 minutes later drifted to wadable water. She was brought to the shore and was revived. Fifty minutes later Artner drifted to shore. He could not be revived.
