Joseph Clark died attempting to save Edward B. Treat, Illinois, aged three, from drowning, Livingston, Alabama, March 26, 1948. While playing with other children Edward, 3, fell into the Livingston City Reservoir. His mother later found him floating 28 feet from the bank in water 10 feet deep, and she screamed. Clark, 29, laborer, ran 290 feet to the bank and fully clothed dived, swam to within three feet of Edward, and floundered. Thinking Clark was in distress, Edward’s mother paddled to her son, Clark meanwhile having disappeared; and with the aid of a rope she and Edward were towed to the bank. Edward could not be revived. Clark’s body was recovered three hours after the act.
