Joseph D. Predl saved James R. Grossbeck from being struck by a train, New London, Ohio, May 21, 1989. James, 17, sat on a railroad track on which a freight train was approaching. On seeing James there, Predl, 48, the train’s fireman, who was in the lead locomotive, ran out of the locomotive and descended to the ground. Predl ran ahead of the train to James, the train following by a few feet. Stepping between the rails of the track, Predl grasped James by the hair and pulled him from the track. They fell to the ground, the front of the train then passing.
