Joseph D. Shepherd, 17, student, died attempting to save Icy R. Richards, 18, and Elbert F. Richards, 23, lumber rail hand, from drowning, Ione, Washington, June 25, 1922. Ms. Richards fell from a boom into the Clark Fork River, and Richards plunged in after her and supported her. They were carried along by a strong current at a distance of 15 or 20 feet from a boom. Richards called to Joseph to get a boat, and Joseph got into a rowboat half full of water, went about 50 feet, and then left it and swam toward Richards and Ms. Richards, who were 35 feet from him. Joseph failed to reach them and was carried under the boom and drowned. Richards and Ms. Richards were also drowned. 22951-1833
