Joseph Delgrosso attempted to save Agostino Cobuccio from suffocation, Boston, Massachusetts, July 25, 1927. Cobuccio, 37, laborer, descended by rope to the bottom of a foundation excavation, which was a hole three feet in diameter and 26 feet deep, to retrieve a man he knew to have be overcome by marsh gas. He fastened the rope around the man but was overcome while the man was being raised. Delgrosso, 38, laborer, knowing of the conditions, slid down the rope to get Cobuccio but was overcome on the bottom by the gas almost immediately. A little later the hole was ventilated. A man then descended and roped Cobuccio and Delgrosso in turn, and they were drawn up. Cobuccio was dead, but Delgrosso and the other man were revived. 27462-2217
