Joseph F. Schuler died saving Norman Trentacosta from drowning, New Orleans, Louisiana, February 7, 1940. Norman, 9, and Joseph, 16, schoolboy, fell from a float, when timbers which formed it separated, in a slip in the Industrial Canal; and Joseph swam to another float and went to the bank. Norman floundered in water 20 feet deep 40 feet from the bank. Fully clothed, Joseph dived from the float and swam 15 feet to Norman, climbing over a drifting timber on the way to him. Joseph took hold of Norman, and there was a struggle. Joseph then towed Norman six feet to the timber, placed him on it, and with difficulty kept him from slipping off for a moment. Joseph then sank and was drowned. Another boy worked his way along a timber to Norman, others extended a board to him, and he and Norman were pulled to the bank. 38273-3196
