Joseph H. Batts, 44, police sergeant, helped to save Amos Schweitzer, 28, from drowning, Niagara Falls, New York, June 5, 1906. Batts went out on a ladder, which had been extended from the shore and was supported at its end by a city fireman who stood 30 feet into the Niagara River. Fifteen feet from the brink of the falls, Batts, having placed his legs between the last two rungs, lunged forward and grabbed Schweitzer, who would not accept assistance. Schweitzer resisted, but his rescuers clung to him, and the ladder was drawn in. Schweitzer had entered the water about 500 feet above the falls and was carried off by the current, but miraculously regained his footing at the point of rescue. 1260-172
