Joseph H. Wernet, 15, school-boy, saved Michael Santacroce, 12, and Thomas R. Keeshan and attempted to save James Pettas from drowning, Queens Village, New York, May 29, 1937. Michael, who could not swim, had preceded Thomas into the water and went beyond his depth. He got hold of a small log, but it rolled continually. Before swimming to James and Thomas, Wernet from the bank waded and then swam four feet to Michael, who was five feet from James and Thomas, and took him to the bank. (See case JAMES PETTAS.)
