Joseph J. Cannon helped to save George D. Gray and assisted in an attempt to save Karl G. Goodrich from drowning, Windmill Point, Ontario, July 6, 1913. Gray, 22, student, and Goodrich, 21, electrician, were two of 10 canoeists caught in a storm on Lake Erie, two miles from shore. Cannon, 21, rodman, and three other members of the party got ashore safely in two canoes. The others failed to arrive. At dusk, Cannon and one of his companions, having been informed that two men had been observed clinging to a canoe, paddled out three-quarters of a mile from shore in a 16-foot canoe. There was a wind of 40 m.p.h., and the waves were 10 feet high. They found Gray, who was clinging to a life preserver and suffering from cramps, and took him aboard their canoe, which was then half full of water. They landed Gray and then put out an equal distance to look for Goodrich, who had been Gray’s companion, and others, but they could not find any of the party. Cannon and his companion returned with their canoe again half filled. They were nearly exhausted, but both recovered. Five of the party were drowned. 11338-1237
