Joseph J. O’Donnell, 39, lineman, died attempting to save William L. Rohn, 37, lineman, from electric shock, South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, October 22, 1916. Rohn, O’Donnell, and three other men were working with bare wires on a high structural iron tower. Some of the wires, which normally carried 6,600 volts, became charged unexpectedly, and Rohn gave a cry and fell against a beam with his clothing afire. O’Donnell first cried to others to help Rohn, and then started toward him, stepping past a man standing on a small platform at one side of the tower. While trying to step around a man standing on a beam close to Rohn, O’Donnell’s foot slipped, and he grabbed a wire and received a shock. He fell to a roof 22 feet below, fracturing his skull, and he died two hours later. Rohn’s dead body was taken from the tower when the current had been turned off. 17270-1294
