Joseph John Vinci saved John D. Webb from suffocation, Chicago, Illinois, March 15, 1977. In a ground-floor apartment, fire broke out in the living room. Vinci, 24, laborer, learned that John, 3, was inside the apartment. Crawling beneath dense smoke, Vinci searched a bedroom and then crawled to John’s room next to the living room, which was nearly filled with flames. Vinci located John and, still crawling, took him to the apartment door, which had closed. After some difficulty opening the door, Vinci emerged from the apartment with John. Vinci and John were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and Vinci also was treated for minor burns. Both recovered. 55687-6349
