Joseph M. Friel, 24, brakeman, saved Agnes E. Walsh, 17, from being run over by a train, Riverton, Pennsylvania, October 25, 1912. Agnes stepped from one track to avoid a light locomotive that, running backward, was approaching behind her. She walked between the rails of another track in front of a freight train that, unknown to her, was approaching back of her at a speed of 20 m.p.h. Friel, who limped somewhat, jumped from the pilot of the light locomotive and, running faster than the locomotive was going, got between the rails of the other track and grabbed Agnes from the rear. He lifted her to a place between the tracks less than four feet wide an instant before the freight locomotive passed over the spot where she had been. He held her while both locomotives passed them. 9456-748
