Joseph M. Tagliarini saved Anthony H. and Joyce M. Prinzivalli from drowning, Brooklyn, New York, January 23, 1947. Anthony H. Prinzivalli, 7, his sister Joyce, 6, and Anthony Barone, Jr., 7, broke through ice on Dyker Beach Golf Course Lake into water 10 feet deep 20 feet from the bank. Joseph, 15, schoolboy, ran 525 feet to the ice and 15 feet on it to the edge of the hole, which was 10 feet in diameter. Breaking through and being submerged briefly, he took hold of Anthony Prinzivalli and Joyce and treading water supported them. Anthony Barone meanwhile was submerged, and he grasped Joseph by a leg momentarily but released it and rose to the surface. Vincent E. Di Filippi, after running 565 feet to the edge of the hole, jumped in and took hold of Anthony Barone. Joseph swam with Anthony Prinzivalli and Joyce to the ice, and hooking his chin over the ice, raised them onto it; and others assisted them to the bank. Vincent swam with Anthony Barone to the edge; and after ice once broke under his hand, he extended his arm on the ice and raised Anthony Barone onto it, from where he was aided by others. Joseph and then Vincent were pulled out of the hole to firm ice, from where they walked to the bank. All were chilled, and Joseph suffered chest and stomach pains for two days. 40947-3534
