Joseph N. Eastman, 31, solicitor, died attempting to save William Gunderman, 14, schoolboy, from drowning, Binghamton, New York, August 8, 1916. William, a very poor swimmer, was carried by the current into deep water 75 feet from the south bank of the Susquehanna River. Removing only his coat, Eastman swam from the north bank 310 feet across the current to William and seized him. William grasped Eastman, also. Eastman supported William for a minute or two, but both then sank and were drowned. 16868-1247
