Joseph R. Waskin rescued Roger L. Taylor from burning, Shippingport, Pennsylvania, March 19, 1982. Following a steam line rupture at the power plant where he worked, Taylor, 36, lay badly injured and burned in a dense cloud of hot vapor. Waskin, 47, electrical repairman, who was working in another area of the plant, went to the level where Taylor lay, and despite the intense heat and limited visibility of the vapor cloud, he picked Taylor up and carried him to the floor below. Taylor, suffering severe injuries and burns, required extensive hospitalization. He recovered except for the loss of his right eye.
