Joseph Stebner saved George W. Hannon from being killed by a train, Mandan, North Dakota, June 15, 1942. Hannon, 45, laborer, stood between the rails of a track on which a passenger-train was approaching at a rapid speed. From a point opposite Hannon, Stebner, 61, switchman, ran 20 feet on a platform to Hannon, reaching him when the locomotive was 50 feet distant. From behind Hannon, Stebner placed one hand on his back and pushed against him. Hannon resisted and started to turn toward Stebner. With his hand still against Hannon’s back Stebner violently pushed him forward clear of the track. Instantly Stebner quickly stepped backward to the side of the track, both clearing the path of the locomotive when it was three to five feet from them. The locomotive passed them at a reduced speed of 15 m.p.h. 39568-3271
