Joseph Stolarczyk died as a result of attempting to rescue Anthony J. Krakowiecki from assault, St. Louis, Missouri, July 10, 1971. When a young man attempted to take from him groceries he was carrying, Krakowiecki, 57, was knocked to the street during a scuffle that ensued. Stolarczyk, 57, church custodian, approached wielding a broom with which he had been sweeping the church steps. The young man took out a pistol and fired at Krakowiecki but missed him. Stolarczyk shouted; and the assailant fired another shot. He then ran across the street, firing a third shot. The assailant fled through an alleyway. Stolarczyk staggered back to the sidewalk, fatally wounded.
