Joseph T. F. Allen, 12, schoolboy, saved Raymond J. Gaunay, 6, from drowning, Troy, New York, March 31, 1912. While at play, Raymond fell from a wharf into the Hudson River, which was at flood stage, and was carried from the wharf by the current. After a better swimmer had made an excuse for not going to the rescue, Joseph took off his coat and shoes and dived into the water, narrowly missing a cake of ice. He swam about 50 feet to Raymond and grasped him, and then swam to the bank with him. 8388-773
