Joseph Thomas Taylor died attempting to save Carl T. Waltenbaugh from suffocation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, July 13, 1979. While Waltenbaugh, 48, was inspecting an excavation at a construction site, a lack of oxygen caused him to collapse unconscious at the bottom of a circular pit about three feet in diameter and 25 feet deep. Taylor, 32, pile driver, entered the pit to aid Waltenbaugh and also lost consciousness. When removed from the excavation, Taylor was pronounced dead, and Waltenbaugh succumbed several days later.
