Joseph Wheeler Gebhardt, 41, machinist, saved C. William McWhorter, 7, from being killed by a train, Huntington, West Virginia, July 10, 1918. William, who stood in the middle of a track watching a train pass on an adjoining track, failed to hear a train which was approaching him at a speed of about 14 m.p.h. Gebhardt leaped forward, going eight feet to William and reaching him when the locomotive was 15 feet from them. He grasped William and drew him from the track, clearing the cylinder of the locomotive by a few inches. The speed of the train was not reduced. 19161-1641
