Josephine E. Clark saved Lura J. Allen from drowning, Appleton City, Missouri, August 23, 1932. While swimming in water eight feet deep in a reservoir, Miss Allen, 16, became fatigued and grasped a girl who was near her. Both were briefly submerged, but the girl got free and swam toward the bank calling for help. Miss Clark, 20, who was suffering from an attack of chronic appendicitis and had been advised by her physician to avoid unnecessary exercise, swam 40 feet and then dived to Miss Allen, who lay unconscious on the bottom. With difficulty she took Miss Allen to the surface and swam 30 feet toward the bank. Meanwhile, other girls clasped hands to form a line that extended from wadable water to water six feet deep. Miss Clark grasped the girl at the end of the line and was pulled to wadable water. The girls helped her to take Miss Allen to the bank, and she was revived. Miss Clark was temporarily exhausted. 32479-2795
