Josephine Picroski, 13, schoolgirl, saved Victoria Korzeniowska, 13, and Mabel Girotkowska, 15, and attempted to save Mary Zybura, 13, from drowning, Chicopee, Massachusetts, February 27, 1911. Josephine, who could not swim and was barefooted, ran 120 feet across rotten ice to the girls, who had broken through into the Chicopee River where the water was seven feet deep. She crawled to within afoot of the hole, and, grasping Victoria and Mabel, in turn, pulled them from the water. She then crawled to the edge of the hole to assist Mary, but, just as she reached out for her, Mary sank and was drowned. 6278-610
