Jozsef Vastag died attempting to save Georgina Vastag from drowning, Trenton, Ontario, May 6, 1989. Mrs. Vastag, 45, and her husband Jozsef, 38, cabinet maker, were fishing from atop a pier of a dam spanning the Trent River when Mrs. Vastag fell into the turbulent water at the base of the dam. Vastag threw a life preserver to her, but it fell short, as she was being carried away by the swift currents. Vastag then shed his coat and jumped into the water after her. He too was carried away by the currents, and he submerged. Mrs. Vastag was shortly removed from the water by other fishermen, but she could not be revived. Vastag’s body was recovered 12 days later; he too had drowned.
