Donald, 8, broke through ice on a pond into water six feet deep 16 feet from the bank, making a hole 30 inches in diameter. He was six feet from firm ice. June, 12, schoolgirl, who was frail and a poor swimmer, walked from the bank toward him. Ten feet from Donald, she lay on the ice, cautiously crawled to the edge of the hole, and with one hand puIled him upon the ice, which broke for 10 inches under him.
