Karen Ames Caylor saved Nancy W. Dudding from drowning, Naples, Florida, May 16, 1989. Mrs. Dudding, 59, was unable to escape her car, which was sinking after having entered the eight-foot-deep water of a canal. Mrs. Caylor, 29, who was nearby, ran to the canal, entered it, and swam to the car. She submerged but was not able to open the driver’s door. After surfacing for air, she submerged again and was successful in opening the door. She then extended her upper body inside the car, which continued to sink, and searched for Mrs. Dudding. Unable to locate her, Mrs. Caylor surfaced for air again, then, in additional dives, she located Mrs. Dudding in the car, pulled her out, and pushed her to the surface of the water. She then helped Mrs. Dudding to the bank of the canal, where arriving policemen removed them from the water.
